Bachelor of Arts Degree

While a History major has traditionally served as a foundation for careers in teaching and law, quite a wide array of occupational choices has always been open to our graduates. History majors are educated in basic intellectual and communication skills that are valued in business, journalism, public service, and many other fields. In recent years, undergraduates have augmented studies in history with computer science, foreign language, or business administration--combinations which have proven attractive in business and government service.

Our students learn to synthesize and interpret a variety of disparate sources. In classes they develop skills of finding relevant information and evidence and the ability to articulate an argument. They practice clear and forceful writing. Our graduates have told us again and again how they have learned not only analytical skills but also gained a valuable perspective on society and the world.

A History major will take 10 courses in History, in addition to the two introductory History courses required of all students in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

These 30 hours must include

  • The Sophomore Seminar (HI 300)
  • The Senior Seminar (HI 491)
  • Six of the courses in the major must be beyond introductory level, with at least four of them being Advanced Electives (400-level classes).

The B.A. degree plan allows 32 hours of free electives for a total of 122 credit hours to graduate.
