I have three daughters: Arden, Kelsey and Luci Van Vleck

Currently residing in Fuquay-Varina NC

I spent two decades working as a music journalist for various national publications, including Billboard, NatGeo's World Music Website, Wired, CDnow, CMJ/New Music Monthly.



Teaching and Research Interests

Research interests include: Pre-modern Christian Theology; Buddhist and Confucian thought; Art History (Renaissance, Baroque, Northern Painting, Islamic architecture)

Extension and Community Engagement

I'm involved in adult education, teaching World Religions, Humanities, Critical Thinking and the Experience of Modern Art for Strayer U, Raleigh.


Lately, I publish novels, the most recent being L'AFRIQUE (2012). 


I will be giving the pre-show talk on the music of world music artist Emel Mathlouthi. The concert will take place Thursday, Oct. 29, 8 p.m., in Stewart Theatre (Talley Center). Pre-show talk at 7 p.m. in 3285 Talley.
